Sanctions enforcement across the EU has been tightened. Under the EU directive 2024/1226, which member states are now implementing in national law, more acts count as criminal offences, including circumvention, and penalties have become tougher, up to imprisonment and corporate fines. Attempts and complicity are punishable too. In short, breaching sanctions is a criminal offence, and the risk has grown.
